Sitaramayya Kurugamti (1889-1959)

Sitaramayya Kurugamti was born 120 years ago on the 13th, in the month of Kartika, in the year “Virodhi.”

Sitaramayya finished BA (Hons) in Sanskrit with a Gold Medal in 1917 from Madras University. He was awarded a foreign scholarship, which he declined because it was against his family (Brahmin) tradition at the time. He also participated in non-cooperation movement. His wife, Seshamma (maiden - Vishnubhotla family), was also a Congress Party volunteer.

After a stint as the principal of National College in Vijayawada and running a college in Ongole, he took up law practice as a pleader in 1929. However, he changed his career back to teaching as the principal of Sanskrit College of Kovvuru and as a professor of Andhra and Sanskrit languages at Nizam College. He also served as deputy inspector of schools, superintendent of Palace Library of Tanjavur, translator at Deccan Radio Information Bureau, editor at Osmania University Sanskrit Manuscript Library, and secretary of Hyderabad Telugu Academy.

He authored more than thirty books, such as, alamkaratatva vicharamu, asafja, navyamdhra sahityaveedhulu, komdaru tamjavuru kavulu, pamditulu, A Handbook of Telugu Literature, satakarni, tamjavuruamdhra nayakraja charitra, navyamdhra sahitya veedhulu, etc.
